Comprehensive Program

Through education, training and outreach, the organizations affiliated with GPY have created comprehensive programs that develop youth in the areas of goal-directed thinking, self-worth, social support, and internal focus of control - areas that have been linked to long-term positive outcomes for youth.

The core program spans six months to one year, beginning with a residential retreat at a campsite in a remote natural setting or a nonresidential course in the city. During the retreat or course, the youth, supported by volunteers, participate in a series of dialogues exploring their past, present and future. A daily one-mile run and/or a physically demanding challenge course are also integral elements of the retreat. The program also includes a ropes course that builds inner strength, builds trust between the youth and adults, and challenges the youth to accomplish the seemingly impossible. The program continues with several months of intensive direct services referred to as the "follow-through" program. The youth and their mentors meet weekly to create and implement action plans which are designed to realize the youth's self-generated goals. Group sessions allow participants to share triumphs and setbacks, evaluate progress, and be introduced to new skills and concepts. Throughout the program, the youth receive continued coaching, support and reinforcement of newly-learned concepts from their mentors as well as program leaders.

Many GPY organizations also offer parent support and skill development programs in conjunction with the core program. Where offered, the parents can actively participate and encourage their child to use their newly-found skills at home.

"We created an in-school coaching program to run simultaneously with our year long follow-through program with the students and mentors. Committed Partners for Youth program serves between 35-40 youth in four Middle Schools from one of the lowest academic and highest school drop out areas of Portland. Counselors and teachers raved about the program last year and asked us to come back again this year. The results were remarkable."

Youth

"Like many others, I was a struggling teen though I tried not to let it show. Somewhere along the line, my smile faded and my life went downhill. After working the steps and graduating from the one year program. Realized what I wanted in life and ho to go about getting it. Without CPY, I would be a lost teenager in the world alone. I give thanks to this program and the people who keep it working day by day."
